Astringents/Tighteners/Toners

Astringent Lotion is used to check the oily skin's tendency to ooze stickness, because oiliness clogs the pores. In order to open them, it is advisable to use a good astringent lotion on the exposed part of the skin. The main ingredients in an Astringent Lotion are: alum, glycerine and water.

Some well known brands of astringent lotion are: max-factor, lakme and gala.

Homemade Astringent Lotion

Honey astringent Recipe

Take 2 teaspoons of honey, nutmeg, coriander seed, 4 teaspoons of grated lemon peel, orange flower water, 1 teaspoon of cloves, 8 teaspoon of alcohol, ½ teaspoon benzoin, very little storax and rose water. To make astringent lotion at home mix all the ingredients and make a lotion. Pour this lotion in a large bottle for 24 hours to 48 hours.

Homemade Rosemary astringent lotion Recipe

Take 2 tablespoon of rosemary powder, lemon peels, 1 tablespoon of orange peels, ½ teaspoon of sodium benzoate , ¼ brandy, 30 mint leaves and 1 cup of rose water. Soak lemon peels, mint leaves and orange peels in boiling rose water for half hour and then mix to make a smooth lotion. Keep the solution in a bottle and can be refrigerated for a long time.


Cleansing Creams Scrubs

Cleansing Cream is used to clean the face of makeup and the dust before going to bed. The layers of makeup, dust and sweat remain as a coat on the face and do not let the skin breathe which may result in wrinkles an dullness.

Cleansing Creams is made with a mixture of stearic acid, mineral oil, lanolin, teropenol, tri-ethanomine, propyline, glycol, and perfume. Some famous brands are: gala, lakme, anne french and max-factor.

Mash 1/2 banana and add 1 tablespoon honey and 2 tablespoons sour cream. Apply to face and let set for about 10 minutes. Gently wipe off with a damp wash cloth.

Honey facial Mask - Take 1½ tbsp. honey, 1 egg white , 2 tsp. glycerin , 1/3 cup flour and Whisk the honey, egg white and glycerin, and then add the flour. The result should be a thick paste. Apply to face and rinse after 15 minutes This mask effectively moisturizes and tightens the skin, making it smooth and soft.

Grind 1 tablespoon almonds into a fine meal in a blender or food processor. Mix almond meal together with 1 tablespoon honey and 1 egg white. Apply to face and let set for about 15 minutes. Gently wipe off with a damp wash cloth.

Mash half of an avocado and apply to entire face. Let set for about 20 minutes and then gently wipe off with a damp wash cloth.

Simply cut a slice from a ripe peach and rub it all over your face. You'll look pretty silly with peach smeared on your face, but leave it on for 20 or more minutes and then rinse off. If the peaches in your supermarket are less than juice-dripping ripe, as is the case for most of the year, you can take a whole peach, pit it, and puree it in the blender and smear that on your face (and then eat the leftovers, yummy).

  • Soak 1 cup dried apricots in water until softened. Puree in blender or food processor with 2 tablespoons skim milk powder. Apply to face and let set about 15 minutes. Gently wipe off with a damp wash cloth.
  • Puree 1/2 peeled, sliced cucumber in a blender or food processor and add 1 tablespoon yogurt. Apply to face and let set about 20 minutes. Gently wipe off with a damp wash cloth.
  • Crush a handful of strawberries and mix well with 1 teaspoon honey. Apply to face and let set for about 15 minutes. Gently wipe off with a damp wash cloth.
  • Mix 1 1/2 teaspoons honey, the juice from 1/2 of a lemon, and 1 small carton plain yogurt. Stir in 1 whipped egg white. Apply to face and let set about 15 minutes. Gently wipe off with a damp wash cloth.

Homemade Clay Facial Masks of Sandalwood

Mix two teaspoons of sandalwood powder and two teaspoons of water to obtain a smooth paste. Apply to your face, avoiding the eye and lip area. Let the mask dry (about 15-20 minutes). Rinse with warm water, using fingertips to gently loosen the mask. Do not scrub skin while removing - especially if you have acne - as it will aggravate troubled spots. Once the mask is removed, splash face with cold water to tighten pores. Your skin will be left feeling soft, smooth and refreshed.

I discovered that if you pierce the end of a cod liver oil capsule and empty the contents ( use the lid off a coffee jar or something) and then a star flower oil capsual, mix these two together, Add a dash of tea tree ( for cleaning and cleansing ) a tea spoon of brown sugar and a splash of lemon juice it tackels the t zone and combination skin perfectly. You have tightened poors that have been cleaned. a natural glow restored by the codliver oil and the sugar will act as an exfoliant. leave on for no more than five minutes i have learnt through experience. *Please note, that as with all recipies some alergic reactions may occour if ou know you are allergic to any of the above ingreediants then do not attempt this face mask*

Grab some mud from your garden and smear on dry skin, leave for half an hour and wash with ice cold water, then apply moisteriser. Another good Mask for beautiful face in my opinion. Suggested by Rose.

For dry skin just beat 3 eggs, 2cups brown suggar, 1 cup of milk, and leave for 10 minutes than peel off.

This is a very easy Homemade Facial Mask: First add 2 eggs, and 1 cup of milk in a bowl set aside than with a potato pealer peal an appel than trow the peals away (or compost them) and than peal the appel down to the core than mix the appel shavings with the milk and eggs add a 1/4 cup of cinomin and blend it all in a blender or a food proseser for about 15 mins. Mix table salt and buttermilk into a paste. Work well into the area where pores tend to be enlarged. Remove with warm water and repeat several times a week until the condition clears up.

Wait for 20 minutes, rinse off with cool water, rub with an ice cube, and then blot dry. Buttermilk salt is easier to prepare. Make a paste from buttermilk and table salt. Work into enlarged-pore areas and then rinse with warm water. Repeat several times a week.

Ingredients:
2 Tbls solid shortening
1 Tbls fruit-flavored powdered drink mix
35 mm film container
Procedure: Mix shortening & drink mix together in a microwave safe bowl till smooth. Place in microwave on high for 30 seconds until mix becomes a liquid. Pour into clean film container, or any other small airtight container.
Place mix into fridge for 20-30 minutes or till firm!

Water melon moisturizer:

Dry Skin

Dry Skin is sensative to the weather and is prone to wrinkles. Protect it against wind, sun and water. The issue of dry skin is a common one and occurs more often in cold weather, like during winter, when cold air outside and heated air inside cause low humidity. The skin lacks both oil and moisture. You may notice that your skin seems more sensitive to your favorite skin care products and cleansers.

Excessive bathing with harsh soaps also contributes to dry skin as does skin conditions like Eczema.

Caring for Dry Skin Type

The best defense against dry, scaly skin is moisturizer. Dry skin should not be washed with cols water and soap, nor should astringemt lotions be used. Instaed, after cleansing it at night, before bed time, it is better to use a good moisturizer which give it some freshness.

Diet, rich wit minerals and vitamins A,B,C,D should be taken.

Take a cup of rice powder and to this add enough milk and rosewater to make a thick paste. Apply evenly all over the forehead, face and the neck area. Leave it on for at least 20 minutes. Try and relax and not move any facial muscles when this paste is applied on the face. After 20-30 minutes when it cakes up, splash cold water on your face, rinse and wash off. The skin appears very taut and the wrinkles seem to have "straightened" out or wrinkles and lines disappeared altogether.

Use glycerine and egg as a anti-wrinkle lotion. Especially good for wrinkles on the hands and the neck. Take the white of an egg in a bowl and add to it 2 tablespoons of glycerine and 2 tablespoons of rose water. Stir well and then apply this lotion on the wrinkled skin as well as on the neck. Sit still and leave it on for 10-12 minutes and rinse off with cold water.

Exercise Helps in Wrinkles Prevention

You can help prevent wrinkles around your mouth with daily facial exercises. Pull exaggerated O and E shapes with your mouth for 30 seconds. Purse lips to right, centre and left of your face. Hold each movementt for 5 second. Repeat three times. Stick out your tongue as far as you can, keeping you eyes wide. You will feel all the muscles working. Repeat 10 times.

Oily Skin

Combination Skin

Combination skin has a greasy area, while surrounding areas are dry. The forehead, cheeks, nose and chin comprise the T-zone, which is almost always oily. The rest of the face is dry. Combination Oily skin is another type that has pores only open in the T-zone and though the texture is oily, the person may have firm, smooth cheeks and forehead. The sebaceous activity does not extend to the cheeks and this kind of oily skin can have areas of dehydrated patches on cheeks and forehead.

Therefore, the combination oily skin type can have a shiny forehead, nose and chin, with tendency for normal skin dry skin around eyes, outer cheek area and neck and still be prone to blackheads and blemishes in the T-zone.

Normal Skin type is very rare. It is one of the best skin types which retains freshness, attraction and flush for long. Normal skin requires very light makeup. Normal skin is the ideal. It produces enough sebum to keep skin supple, but not so much that skin looks slick. If you have normal skin, the tissue test may produce light oil stains but nothing more.

Care Tips for Normal Skin

Face should be washed with clean water. It the usual tap water in your area is hard, soften it by adding a little borex powder to it. In order to keep the glow of your skin, it is important to wipe off your makeup before going to bed with a good cleansing cream.

Do not use makeup atleast once a week so as to let your skin breathe fresh air. For normal skin, toning, daily cleansing and nourishing should be done. For this use a mild or balanced soap. Soft water should be used to wash the face daily.

Baldness Cure using Bhringaraj

Take 4 parts of Bhringaraj, 3 parts of Jatamamsi and 5 parts of Dashamoola. Mix all ingredients with hot goat milk and then boil this mixture. Drinking this milk everyday before going to bed at night helps in reducing hair loss or baldness.

Hair Loss home remedy using Amla Oil

Amla oil is considered very useful in treating hair loss. Mix equal quantity of fresh amla juice and lime juice and use this as a hair shampoo. It prevents baldness.

Take a little amount of honey and a few drops of kanta karika juice. Mix both of ingredients very well and apply this mixture over the scalp.

Mix 4 tbsp of yoghurt and 4 tbsp of camphor lotion. Apply it on the head, leave it to soak for 2-3 hours then wash off with lukewarm water.

The easiest and the cheapest solution is to grow the remaining hair, and then to restyle it to cover the baldness affected areas. Conditioning the hair would give body to the hair; but these methods can be resorted to only in mild cases of baldness.

Rubbing a slice of lemon the bald patches for a month or two will restore the growth of hair.

Seeds of lime and black pepper ground together to a fine paste helps treat patchy baldness.

For head lice use Listerine (original flavor): Another remedy for treating head lice is rubing listerine mouth wash on your head. This will kill all the lice.

Massage your head with mayonnaise and comb it after 2 hours. This will kill all the lice and their eggs. Apply a mixture of lemon and butter on your head, wait for 15 seconds and then rinse your head.

An anti-lice oil can be mixed with coconut (or mustard) oil and 0.2 per cent lindane (BHC) or 0.1 per cent pyrethrum essence. This oil can be rubbed well into the scalp to kill lice. (Ingredients can be purchased from a chemical dealer).

Mix talcum powder with 0.2 per cent prethrum dust in it (or add 10 per cent DDT). Sprinkle this powder on the hair before going to bed and rub it vigorously so that it reaches the roots. Cover your mouth, nose and eyes to protect them from the powder.

Anti-louse lotion, either gammabenzene hexachloride lotion or cream (Lorexane, Gammaexane) or Malathion (Prioderma) will kill the eggs which can be removed by a comb with very fine teeth. One treatment is enough but all the family who are infested should be treated and the hair examined regularly for a while. You may consult a doctor for the treatment.

Dandruff -

Try one of these natural ways to cure dandruff and prevent your hair from damages. Dandruff is the enemy of the hair. It weakens the roots. The main symptom of dandruff is the presence of flaky skin region present in and around the scalp area. The scales can vary in size from small dust-like particles to large, greasy, yellow flakes. The good news is that dandruff can be easily cured at home by home remedies.

Home Remedies for Dandruff

Apply a paste made of crushed sesame seeds to hair (soak them for two hours at least). Keep it on for at least half-an-hour before washing.

Apply a paste of boiled Bengal gram (kala chana) and fenugreek seeds (methi dana), soaked overnight. You could mix two teaspoons of fenugreek seeds in a small bowl of Bengal gram.

Even washing hair after applying a paste of Bengal gram flour (besan) for half an hour, keeps hair clean and soft.

For treating mild dandruff, massage hair with coconut oil mixed with the juice of one lemon. Follow it with a hot towel treatment. The massage really boosts bloods circulation.

For oily dandruff (there's both the dry and oily variety) apply multani mitti (fuller's earth) but for no longer than 10 minutes, so that it comes off easily.

SOAP NUT (REETHA) is ideal for removing dandruff. Soak half cup soap nut overnight in one cup of warm water. Extract the juice from the soap nut by rubbing them vigorously. Strain. Apply directly on the scalp. Leave this on for 15 minutes. Rinse and wash your hair with tepid water. Shut your eyes tightly while rinsing as it hurts the eyes. Ensure that no residue is left behind.

Beets have been found very useful for treatment of dandruff from past many years. Both tops and roots should be boiled in water and this water should be massaged over the scalp with the finger tips every night, for fast cure.

The use of fresh lime juice is very useful remedy for the treatment of dandruff. Take one lime, and take out its juice in a small utensil. Now you may apply this juice over your hair will help of your fore finger and middle finger. This remedy will not only help to remove dandruff out of your hair, but will also help to make your hair glowing

Rinse your hair with neem juice; it's an excellent cleanser.

Mix two tablespoons of cosmetic vinegar and six tablespoons hot water. Dab with cotton into the scalp, parting the hair with a comb. Preferably, apply it at bedtime and tie a scarf over the head to avoid staining the bedclothes. Next morning wash the hair with a shampoo. After the hair is thoroughly rinsed, pour over as a last rinse, a mixture of 3 tablespoons of cosmetic vinegar and a cup of hot water.

Hot oil therapy is another method to cure dandruff. Massage hot oil into the scalp at bedtime. Next morning, an hour before the bath, rub lemon juice mixed with cosmetic vinegar into the scalp with cotton wool. Give the hair a good wash with egg shampoo. As a last rinse, use the juice of one lemon in a cup of hot water. Continue this treatment once or twice a week for three months.

Dandruff Cure tips for dandruff removal and proper hair care

A clean scalp is the only way to beat dandruff. Washing the hair and scalp frequently with a good dandruff shampoo can help get rid of the most stubborn dandruff, given some time.

  • Dandruff shampoos can be either Clinical or Herbal. The former kind of anti-dandruff shampoos consist of special chemical formulation that fights and controls dandruff growth
  • The Herbal variety of anti-dandruff shampoos are equally popular and are gentler on the scalp, therefore gaining ground among users.

  • Warm 4-5 tablespoons full of wheat germ oil, olive oil or coconut oil. Massage well into the scalp. Wrap a warm towel around your head. Leave it on for 30 minutes. Rinse your hair thoroughly with water, to which lemon juice has been added. Massage well as you rinse. This is the most commonly known cure for dandruff.
  • Another major cause of dandruff is stress. Opting for ways to release tension and indulging in short term leisure pursuits one enjoys-be it meditation or daily walking- can work to minimize stress and lower possibilities for dandruff growth.

Homemade Dandruff Remedy

Soak two tablespoonfuls of Fenugreek seeds overnight in water. In the morning the softened seeds are ground into fine paste and applied on the scalp, left on for 1/2 hr

Infuse 2 tbsp. of fresh or dried rosemary and sage in 1 gallon of water for 24 hours. Use daily as a hair rinse.

Your diet must consists of fruits, raw salads( cabbage, tomato, cucumber, radish, carrot etc.) , minerals, vitamins( especially vitamin A), green leafy vegetables, and raw foods

Mix the olive oil with the almond oil. Leave it on about 5 minutes after it starts to burn. Rinse well to clear dandruff. Massage your hair with warm coconut oil and apply the juice of two lemons, leave the oil on for about 2 hours. Shampoo with a mild shampoo. Repeat 2-3 times a week.

Crush a tablespoon of fenugreek seeds in about 5 tablespoons of warm coconut or olive oil. It would be better to boil them in the oil. Cool the mixture and apply generously all over the scalp. Leave it on for two hours. Rinse and wash off. This will helps to get rid of dandruff.
