FASHION ART

I know, I know, the holidays are officially over. And for the most part I am happy and ready to be back to work. The holidays feel like this dreamy time, this out of time-time where real life is sort of suspended, at least for many people I think. And the sober reality sets in just around now and we're supposed to let go of all the pretty elements that the holiday's usher in; but as I suspected I still want to wear shiny things and sparkles to boot. I also want to linger long in my bed and eat late breakfasts every morning. At least today's reality comes in the form of Saturday which allows for a little buffer before the reality of Monday sets in. And it seems Mr. DG isn't ready to let go of the Christmas tree, he will not let me take it down. I suppose we all have our attachments!

It was the one night of the year it felt completely within reason to wear huge vintage rhinestone earrings AND a silver fix fur stole, gotta love New Year's Eve! And having never actually worn a fur stole before I found it surprisingly warm and not just for "show". We were at a restaurant that was slightly chilly so I kept the stole on and it did the trick! I did have to remove it when I ate my beet soup, I was terrified of spilling on it, can you imagine? That would have been a terrible start to 2010. But then if I had spilled it on the top of my dress, well, that would have been just fine, ha!

Happy New Year and merry sale!

Thing is, I am partial to vintage jewelry. Like fur, I tend to feel it's better just to buy up what's out there because there's plenty out there. That being said, sometimes new jewelry sort of hits the mark for me and Winifred Grace does just that. Also, I admit per my last trip to the mall yesterday, Banana Republic also seems to be hitting this mark, but I digress, this post is about Winifred Grace and the subtle but glamorous jewelry I find really appealing. Last night I watched 'Gentleman Prefer Blondes' and watched it expressly because of my new found attraction for fancy jewelry. I just love how unabashed Marilyn Monroe's character is and also how she says the word "diamonds". If you haven't seen it, the holidays are the perfect time for movie renting!

If all these items didn't "belong" to the shop I might have myself an outfit for New Year's Eve. And I have started wondering why we only have one small window of time where it's acceptable and almost required to wear sparkly things. I myself think I'll don all things sparkly well into the new year!

Today was a lot of errand running and I knew I'd want to be warm, so I wore this cute pair of 1950s wine wool ski pants I got over the summer. Wouldn't you know it that half way through the day the side zipper broke. When zippers break it's especially crappy because because I really don't like replacing them.  Good thing I am going to my mother's for Christmas eve and Christmas where I can lug all my more laborious sewing projects, merry Christmas mom!

I've always considered myself a 1930s-1940s gal, I have gravitated to the styles of those two decades throughout my entire life. But lately I've found myself attracted to the very early 1960s. Perhaps it's Mad Men, I admit, but it's also the film, 'An Education' and the recent visit to the Motown museum. It's also worth mentioning that this style switch might be spurred by my hair length, which lends itself well to the look of 1961. Along with that is how the styles of the early 1960s seem decidedly "grown up" and very "smart". I am having fun expanding my personal vintage collection by scooping up pieces not unlike the ones above. Never will I abandoned my love of 1930s-1940s clothing, not a chance. I see this more of a broadening. Vintage fashion is surprisingly unstatic, there's too many years of fashion history for that. I love how new vintage obsessions can be sparked so easily. I'm collecting rhinestones by the dozens it seems, a gem I used to pass up as though they were rocks.

I am a bit of a neat freak, I like things real tidy and wig out a little when things aren't that way. But when you go to the same mindblowingly amazing estate sale two days in a row that is basically a vintage warehouse you just somehow deal with a little chaos in your house. I am doing some deep breathing, but am also way way excited about the things I have found in the past two days. It'll take me a month to process it all (sort, clean and photograph), but it's terribly fun sifting through what I have got. All the shoes! All my size! Every dress has it's belt and all it's buttons! Sigh...I've got my work cut out for me, but it's a beautiful mess to be in for sure.

Sequins by day, why not!? I figured paired with other cozy clothes they are just about excellent. I found this great sequined t-shirt at just about the junkiest vintage store I'd ever been to last month and unlike so many of my clothes (only getting worn once), I've already wore this baby twice! And I have resolved to keep it in rotation well after the holidays have past because, why not?

Never, in all my years, was I ever a fan of leopard print or any animal print at all really. I couldn't stand it actually. So imagine my surprise when I came across this little Jonathon Logan number and before I knew it, found myself purchasing it. Completely out of my normal style in so many ways, there was just something about it that I liked. Little did I know that once it arrived in the mail it would works it's magic on me twofold. I am totally converted, I love this leopard print dress with all my heart. Midweight fabric, scoopneck, fitted waist with unique tie belt and full skirt - what's not to love? I did not anticipate not even wanting to take the thing off...but that's exactly what happened. It fits like it were made for me, which only makes my love affair with it all the more potent. Jonathon Logan dresses are some of my favorite, they were well made mid-priced dresses, sort of like the JCrew of the 1950s-60s. Something lots of people could afford but also nicely made. Dear me, I am in love...

Be warm!

My new hair, freshly fringed. The verdict is in and I like it. I though I didn't but I was being stupid. I like it up more than down which is good since I sort of live with my hair pulled up. What I like best about this hair is that it's total wash and wear hair. I just dry it or let it dry and this is what I get - which is okay by me!

And more of my head here in a little hat preview...

Finally! We have the snow, snow snow snow. I don't mind if we get some more even. Save for my trip to the post office I've got nowhere to go. So here are some scenes of dear golden on a snow day, which contrary to a fun snow day where you get our of school, my snow day means I  can hole up in my house and work work work - mostly today will be cleaning and mending and I think I'll make a daytime fire even, because I can.

And also...a shop update!

Tuesday I was out shopping for the shop at some of my favorite spots and at my last stop of the day I found this 1920s black silk chiffon beaded dress - in PERFECT condition, no rips, no tears, no missing beads. Amazing. I bought straight away and thought I'd put it in the shop, but I made the mistake of putting it on and it's even BETTER on...so it's mine (at least for now). And the cute little cotton sailor blouse that I found Tuesday is now soaking in a bath of Oxyclean and I cannot wait to see it's brilliance later tonight!

I hate when this happens. I got my bangs cut today and well, this is me before I got my haircut - I think it might have been better not to look at photos of my hair pre-bang cut. Until moments ago I loved the bangs, like a lot. It didn't really occur to me that I could just stop liking them. Thankfully there isn't anything wrong with them so I don't think I'll be unhappy about them much longer, but still, I was in my honeymoon stage with them until I reviewed some photos of my hair from just recently. This all being said I realize that I was not going to be able to stop myself from cutting them, it was only a matter of time. It was either cut the bangs or cut all the hair. So, this post as banal as it all sounds is all about my silly hair. My silly bangs, which will have their photo on here in a matter of days I am sure, but here lies my old, ladylike hair, may it rest in peace...until I decide to ride the bobbypin lightening for another collection of months and grow them out again. Women!

The laziness has past and the shop is in full swing, I've added a lot the past 24 hours and well, there's always more to list, but today I am going for a haircut and manicure and a little shopping (for the shop of course!).

I've been quite lazy. Laziness is sort of insidious isn't it? I mean, it took me forever to settle down, stop working and take a break and well, now that I have it's really set in and I find the notion of working as hard as I was before Christmas pretty unattractive. This lazy has really grown on me. I've milked it, nurtured it and lauded it. And now I am must bid it adieu because I have a house full of vintage to put in the shop. I am excited for all that I have to add to the shop this month though, which I am relying on to get me going once Monday morning comes. Until then I'm hanging on to this final day of my foray into laziness. Hopefully I can shed it easily, but it's going to take a lot of coffee..

The clothing brand DESIGUAL born in 1984 and its core values are positivism, tolerance, innovation and fun. The colors, design, illustration and your own style, made it a unique and exclusive brand to creative people who loves the good side of life. His pieces are colorful, bold and truly unique.
This is my Desigual coat, was the most expensive purchase that I made in my whole life but I am happy with it because it´s different, when I used I can´t find anyone with something like that (except the fakes). And I'm glad to know that I start to give more value to the quality and sophistication of what I wear.

I leave you with this simple outfit, hope you like it . I do not know why but today I am happy :)

"In the end all the effort worth"

Hello girls, everything is okay? Today I leave you with a simple outfit, is a style that I use when I go to work. Kiss*
Pants - Zara, Top - H &M; Shoes - Stradivarius

I saw some floral trousers the other day at The Salvation Army and now regret that I didn't pick them up. Good grief (or Argh!).

One of everything, please. No, wait. Two of everything, just in case. Alright, alright, three of everything! One to go out in, one to eat in, and one to sleep in.

So I got this dress. And when I got it it resembled a giant wadded up used kleenex, sorry, but it did. I did not even bother to unfurl it's crinkled and bunched up-ness, I just took it straight to the dry cleaner. I picked it up yesterday and it exceeded all my expectations. I was smitten. I AM smitten. And here's the sad news. She doesn't fit me. SO, I could have it tailored, which I may, or I could just sell her. But it's too hard to decide. I cannot part with her yet...this dress looks like an iced cupcake. For now it/she will live on my dress form whereupon I see her the minute I wake up. Will I keep or sell her, her fate is yet to be decided...

And to balance her, I am wearing a pretty lackluster and totally casual outfit because all I had to do yesterday was pick her up, have lunch with my brother and go to the post office. And all the things I am wearing are thrifted, every one, big surprise.

So I have been posting these little outfit collections on my Facebook page for Dear Golden, calling them "Maybe an Outfit" and I felt like maybe I should also put them on my blog. They are real fun to do, sort of like paper dolls or dressing up a barbie. Or like Polyvore, but all from my shop!

I love cream and black together, I love piles of vintage shoes laying around, I love droopy silk blouses, I love cast iron garment racks, I love fireplaces...and on and on.

Actually it's also somewhere between winter and spring, this Thakoon collection. And I love love love it. I especially love the belted coats that aren't belted coats. What it does is render all those vintage coats without closures I see completely fashion relevant today. Short ones and long one. And even those vintage 1950s sweaters without closures (buttons, etc). I have a 1950s linen duster in the shop that I think I am going to have to "buy" from myself as it certainly fits in this vibe.

FASHION ART (PART 3)

  • My PHOENIX maxidress: $15 buffalo exchange. Once again, late on the bandwagon, but I've recently discovered the joys of maxi-dresses. I feel like a goddess. HAHA
  • Zipper necklace: $1 venice beach, i love this thing too bad you can't see it.
So I was randomly at Venice Beach walking around in this and one of the street artists yelled at me. "Girl in the fire dress!" I turn around to see a semi-clean bum/artist. "I like you're dress! It looks like my paintings. Come look!" I give him a thumbs up. I like encouraging artists to do what they're passionate about.

This pass weekend has been simply awesome. Starting Thursday, it not only meant the beginning of a weekend but I got to meet Joyce Azria and Lubov Azria the creative directors of BCBGeneration and BCBG! Super exciting. I got free dresses while I was at it and snapped by thecobrasnake.

The weekend was even more exciting as my roomies and I went off to Las Vegas to celebrate the the baby roomie's 21st birthday!

The clubs were so nice even though expensive. I realize the advantages of being a girl now. I'm not so sure if I really want to be a man anymore. I'm way too cheap to go that route. Which is a shame because I'm sure I would make a terrific man.

I got to wear my fancy dresses and dazzle (hehe, just for you dazzle!) it up with sparkly makeup. The thing I love about Vegas is that you can really go all out when dressing up because seriously, people don't really care.

I did gamble. I lost $2 and I was very heartbroken. I could have found a neatest vintage dress with that 2 bucks but now it's gone forever in the money pits of Caesar's Palace.

It's surreal to be back. In general, vegas is such a surreal place. I've been to Paris, Rome, New York all in one night. Plus an igloo as I felt myself being the real life Eskimo at the Icebar.

So it's back to school. Lately I've been loving big hair. Witness my moments of self-obsession with these webcam pics. So MySpace no?

I recently got really into Japanese Fashion magazines thanks to my dazzle and I saw this super awesome hairstyle that I just loved loved loved on Tomotomo that I had to try copying it. Basically I want to be like Hermione Granger to the extreme and asian. I've been trying to curl my hair and then tease it to get the poof but it never lasts the way I want it to look past five minutes. How sad.

I should read now. So distracted by online shopping and misadventures.

  • t-shirt dress: $6, LF Warehouse sale
  • thick sock tights: 2 euros, Milan
  • green pea coat: mom didn't want it.
  • my new favorite boots: $35, LF warehouse sale
  • Pashmina: 5 euros, Milan
  • Belt: funk master-t's mom didn't want it.
  • Bag: friend didn't want it.
  • Floral ears: $3, F21
  • Blue eyes: 300 RMB, Dalian-China
  • Going to the bathroom: 25 cents.

The clothes at Sophistix are a mix of trendy and classic. Perhaps trendy + classic = sophisticated? Fashion and math should merge someday and then I can be the ultimate fashion nerd. I went back to the site to look at some of their newer merchandise. Not everything on the site is particularly my style but I sifting through the images I've found delightful number of pieces that would be a great addition to my (your) wardrobe. Actually, lets stick with your wardrobe because my wardrobe is like a damaged liver to an alcoholic. Too much clothes reside in my wardrobe at the moment that I finally have to admit that I, Lala, do indeed have a shopping problem.

Camille Blouse - $17.14
Although summer time isn't quite here yet (the weather in socal right now however likes to trick us into thinking it is), this top would be such a lovely addition to match things with - tucked in with a skirt or paired with some denim shorts and a nice floppy hat. Take me to the beach now!!!

Zip-Front Tulip Dress - $27.85
I also love this dress because a) I like zippers and b) I like animal prints. The silhouette is very cute and this dress can is very versatile for all seasons.

I am doing a project for a magazine where I am supposed to let them know what my shopping habits will be for Spring 2010 plus to give them a couple of portraits of myself. The portraits thing has driven me a little bit crazy.......And So I have gone through my whole Computer for images of myself...ohlalala!!! on this journey though I found things I have styled a long time ago and became sort of Overwhelmingly Nostalgic!

Here is to the Past:)

Thanks to All Who has Been Loves of Mine during this new Century.

Happy New Year to All of You! I wish All of you The Very Best 2010.

First image was a project I had at my first job, it was to do market work to style Kings and Queens of New York:) and I can not for my life remember who shot it:( then on to Jon Bergman, Alice (my sister who shot backstage photos of Nike in red tylle skirt and my assistant backstage of a shoot I did for Paper Magaizne), Martina Olsson, Poppy de Villeneuve, 3 of Martina Olsson and last my dear Lena Modigh.

There are more to thank since I've worked with so many during this decade. I will dedicate something else to them later!

Like an Artsy Beautiful Victorian Lady!
I have been working on signs and photos for my booth! My pink booth is getting a complete makeover!!!

I really want to make my booth feel more "personal", like a little shop. Very little shop considering my booth is only 40 square feet!

I can't have my own store, but I can just keep making my booth better. I had two booths, but I have decided to downsize to just my pink booth. I want to be able to spend all my time on it! With spring coming I also will have less time to work on my booth! I have alot of work to do outside this year! (those who follow my blog have seen the photos! yikes!)

I thought cute little signs framed sitting in the booth here and there would be a cute added touch! I sell purses new and old, Marilyn Monroe photos, glassware, decorative items, and anything that is cute. Here is a old photo of my booth taken sometime last year....

I have sold most everything in this photo. The pretty white desk & hutch is gone. It always looked so pretty in my booth, but I sold it. (money is good!) Now I just have to find time to do all this,.

I have always liked Marilyn Monroe. I love the Andy Warhol prints of Marilyn. That is basically where my "collection" and "love" for her started.

There is a photo of Marilyn in almost every room of my house. The inspiration piece for my bedroom is my orange Marilyn Warhol print. I have been working on decorating my bedroom for over a year now. I am excited to say that I finally took my Warhol print and had it framed. I can't wait to share my photos of my bedroom!!!

FASHION ART (PART 5)

Now that my office is almost done I am ready to move on to my next project. The Guest Bedroom will home a nursery someday, but for now it will decorated it like this....

Design Board ~ Marilyn Monroe, Vintage and Modern

The main inspiration piece for this room is the vintage 1970's poster, " The love in you heart wasn't put there to stay, love isn't love till you give it away ". The room is just a collection of items I already have that are just being stored in closets and in my basement. I just have to purchase a few accessories and paint basically. Decorating on a budget can be challenging, but if you are like me you got a bunch of STUFF that you probably can use to do a whole room over!!! I really wanted to paint the room a shade of yellow or purple, but I decided on dark gray. I decided that the accessories would be enough color for this room.

Clothing from forever 21 and Wet Seal.

They featured an outfit Gwen Stefani was wearing featured on their blog. They show how you can get the look for less.....

I love Gwen Stefani and her style. I love how she has kept her BLONDE hair all these years and not really changed who she is. She has stayed true to herself and is beautiful. She also is an inspiration to me because she has 2 kids and still has kept her tiny figure!!
I went "window" shopping the other day and it inspired me to make some design boards featuring clothing. Not something you usually see me do! I really want a wardrobe makeover!!! Here are some of the things I am dreaming of....

A NEW LOOK OF STYLE

The last winds of spring and summer are still haunting me.

the fashion spot, lolita, loou, elle.

Isn't Bella's hair amazing?
Reminds me of Gwen Stefani and Courtney Love...
and makes me wish I'd look good with that color!
Sorry for the lack of posts, but after this weekend things should finally reach a normal sanity level.

In other news....

About 2 months ago, the lovely people at Matchstick got in contact with me to do a collaboration, featuring Maybelline's newest mascara, Pulse Perfection.
Now, I get to share it with you guys!

This mascara has a pulsing wand, which at first weirded me out a little.
But as soon as I tried it, I found it to be quite a pleasant experience.
I got compliments immediately, and I also noticed that my non-existant eyelashes were somehow present on my face. Honestly, as a non-beauty junkie, I wouldn't rave about something that was crap, since I use products so few and far between...

This product is almost as well formulated as Great Lash, and I think it just might become a classic! One of you lucky readers will win a tube when I post the draw next week, along with several other goodies! :D

I wish tulle and sequins would fill my days.

Camilla! How I love thee...
You're like the coolest mannequin come to life.
Oh, and can I get a nice pink patch of hair, just like you?
Enough about my envy,

Phillip Lim, I love you.
No really, I do.
The 3.1 Phillip Lim SS10 collection featured cute preppy jackets, sweet swirled dresses and my favourite, glitter!
How sick is that glitter blazer, really?
All in all, a superb collection.

A NEW LOOK OF STYLE (PART 4)

I wish I had the time to take proper outfit shots as I changed into the skirt at once! I am on the other hand packing as I am leaving for Stockholm tomorrow. I always get so stressed out when I am going somewhere even though I usually always have everything under control. Better shots to come though - I have a feeling I will be wearing this skirt a lot!

Today is a day for detox at our house and has mostly been spent in the bedroom. It started with getting the biggest mirror in the world. At least it´s huge. I was so tired of squatting down check out my outfits in the mirror of the vanity and figured it was about time to get a proper one. And this is with no doubt a proper mirror. I almost couldn´t sleep last night cause I was so excited of bringing it home today and since we finally got it I have barely left the room.

I collected the very last of my coins and got an issue of British Vogue. Somehow it makes more sense to spend my money on something fun rather than food. Anyway, flipping through the magazine on my way back home made me realize how much I´d like to get my hands on more prints. It´s just so much easier to mix and match when you have a little to choose from. Even printed socks feels like a must.

The weather report said it was going to be sunny today so I had planned to finally wear one of my new maxi dresses, but I guess they were wrong. Since the back of the dress is cut really low, it´s not really suited for cold weather and a warm coat is highly necessary.

I had to change clothes to go see the fireworks as it was impossible to tuck the huge sleeves on my dress in under a coat. So I went with the boots and sweater I got today, the sweater that turned out to be long enough to wear as a dress. The fireworks were spectacular! Afterwards we went out for a few beers at a trashy pub and ended the evening with a big mac at McDonalds. Not as glamorous as the start of the evening, but still great.

I got an ugly prom dress secondhand today as I liked the color and the ruffles at the bottom. I thought I could use it to make a skirt. An elderly lady in the shop obviously didn´t think it was as ugly as I did as she shoutet at me “Oh, you got that dress? I´m so happy! I looked at it and thought that I would have gotten it if I was young!”.
Then I got home and cut it to pieces. I am extremely impatient when it comes to these things. I hate using pins and measuring stuff, so I just took a plunge and hoped for the best. The sewing machine was giving me a hard time and the fabric was hell sewing, so I got really annoyed. My husband came over and asked “How´s it going my little flower?”. Now I was the one shouting “Shut up! Please go away!”.
Silly me forgot to take before shots of the dress, but the skirt didn´t turn out at all too bad in the end. A little ruffle for the ruffle crazy.

I´m going all black today. I guess the weather is still getting to me. Instead of colors I am wearing a set of rings that mean a lot to me. The big flower ring is one that was given to my mom by her parents, that my mom gave to me, and that I will give to my future daughter someday. The ring with the ruby is the engagement ring that my dad gave my mom. And of course my wedding ring. The rest are just from various high street shops. Now I am off to H&M to track down a dress that I want. I am also planning on getting a dark red lipstick, like my nail polish. I wear so much lipstick these days that I need some variation.

I´ve been planning to do some tie dyeing for like forever after discovering just how hard it is to find something nice of the sort in shops, but I kept forgetting to buy something to dye. So today I decided it was about time to do something about it. I had a look through my closet to find something, just to test it out at least. I found an H&M tank that I recently got without trying. It looked so nice in the shop, but when I got home I discovered that it was see-through at the same time that you couldn´t wear a bra underneath it because of the cut. I meant to return it but never did. It would have to do.
While tying the knots on the tank I felt quite lost as for what I was doing. Suddenly I didn´t know which side was which anymore so I just tied my little knots wherever there was room. The other part was the actual dyeing, problem being that the instructions were in German, and my German is a little rusty. I didn´t even understand the name of the color, it just looked like something dark, almost black something. It turned out pretty well in the end though I think, and after stretching, it´s almost long enough to wear as a dress.

I have been trying to make my husband get used to the idea of tie dye since we met more than a year ago. He was still pretty iffy on it, but agreed to dye a stained white t-shirt he had lying around. Didn´t turn out to bad that one either. If he doesn´t wear it, I´ll snatch it for myself.

I also have a ton of slips and half slips around, so I decided to give a skirt ago as well. In this one you can really tell how lost I was when it came to tying the knots. On one side there are just random circles here and there, while on the other side, there´s one big circle. I´m not sure what my original idea was anyway, wear my half slip as a skirt? It might work, but would feel very 1990´s as that´s probably the last time I did that. Not to mention also the last time I wore anything tie dye.

It was nearly spring, all of a sudden it´s winter, and I feel like I´m stuck indoors with nothing better to do than playing around with clothes. It makes me want to dress a little more dramatic than usual. Sorry about the cigarette, the holder has been lying around since the 20´s party, and it´s too tempting not to play around with it.

This is what I wore to the dinner party yesterday. The weather is unpredictable and I ended up walking home in the snow wearing these heels.

It´s a little funny that in the middle of my vintage lingerie hunt this fashion spread should pop up in the very magazine I am featured in. In Amica you can see this lingerie, some of which looks really, really old while in fact it´s brand new. It seems like you can get the right vintage feel at Triumph, La Perla and several others. You don´t have to roam thrift shops and you don´t have to worry about who might have worn it before you got to it. The downside is that the really good stuff is still pricey. Lets hope the high street shops catches on.

Several of you have asked what kind of make-up I wear, so here it is. Not all of this is in my daily routine as I usually don´t bother with foundation and all of that. On a busy day I´ll only wear concealer, pressed powder, mascara, a light eye shadow and blush. If I´m going all out, this is it.

All of these are products I am very pleased with and that I have ended up with after a lot of testing so I can happily recommend every single thing in here. What I would like to find is the perfect mascara (there´s always something wrong with them), the perfect color blush and more eye shadow colors (I tend to only wear pink, brownish grey and black).

A NEW LOOK OF STYLE (PART 5)

AAA

I'm considering doing a major overhaul on my wardrobe and selling/donating all the things that I don't wear, at the same time attempting to find trust worthy basics that are foolproof but still interesting. I don't know about you guys, but a lot of the time I have a moment where I debate, hem and haw over what to wear, with nothing really standing out.
I'd like to own a couple of no-brainer peices to make make rushed mornings a little easier.
Stylestalker would be the perfect solution to my problem, if I had the funds!
They have several "simple" peices that could be accesorized into deceptively cute outfits with little to no effort. Plus the cape and miltary skirt are killing me.
Wish list? I think so!

ART OF LIFE

Way back in the day when I was brainstorming over what I would like my blog name to be, one of the titles on the list was "The Fashion Plate." Why? Like "clothes horse," the term is antiquated with multiple meanings; used figuratively it references a person who conforms to the latest fashions. The literal phrase comes from hand-engraved plates introduced in the beginning of the 1800s to promote the clothing style of the time. The illustrations of the plates would be published in the popular newspapers and magazines of the day. Today they give us a detailed, if idealistic, depiction of the style of bygone eras. These fashion plates are from the 1870s and Hungary. Detailed and rich in color, they epitomize what fashion plates became at the peak of their popularity in the mid-1800s.

STYLE OF THE DAY

I remember the first time I started the His Dark Materials series. I was in 5th grade, and every year the librarian from the local public library came and gave a talk about how to get a library card and about the library and all sorts of important boring stuff but the really exciting bits were the new books she brought. I remember she brought The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife. I asked mom for them shortly thereafter and have very vivid memories of sitting on our old porch on a kind of wicker chaise lounge and just inhaling these books.

I think it is safe to say they are more dear to me even than the Harry Potter books, because I was younger yes when I read them, but also because they appealed to me in a more sinister mechanical sense. Deamons also really appealed to me, as did Lyra (and who didn't have a huge crush on Will, fingers and all?).

So, needless to say (what a stupid phrase!) I'm both really excited and very worried about the movie. I feel reasonably alright about it from the trailers and things (despite Nicole Kidman's decidedly golden locks), but what I am also excited about is the costumes. Not a total surprise, but a nice one nonetheless.

For example, I need to own this dress, in my size. Gimmie, gimmie, gimmie, I need, I need, I need.

I also love this, with the little smock. I feel this particular image and outfit is very reminiscent of my childhood, since my mom used to make me little dresses like that and my dad often had all kinds of weird mechanical science type things lying around.

Granted, she could make a dishtowel look good, but still. I need it, because I always wanted to be a witch in the manner of Serafina.

I have to admit, I'm not all that crazy about this one but it does work. I do seem to remember her wearing a lot of fur though, or perhaps I just made that up. Either way, it's gorgeous.

Also ft. Daniel Craig and tweed! (I couldn't find any pictures that I didn't hate, so snubs to that) And pirates. Also, a hot air balloonist with a bunny. I cannot wait, I might pass out.

I'm really sorry about the unoriginal title. It really did need to be done though.

I have always wanted a clear umbrella like this one, but mostly, how superb is this picture! It makes me feel as though I ought to have an umbrella to match every outfit.

I adore umbrellas. I doodle them a lot, usually with strange animals like snails (who don't need umbrellas) or mice (who I really hope have tiny mice-sized umbrellas in their tiny lives). The first umbrella I can remember owning had Catwoman on it. It was black and white with grey and yellow, and it was made out of some kind of shiny stretchy vinyl-esque substance. I remember loving it and using it all the time, even when it wasn't raining.

I also had a doll who had a parasol, and I felt that I needed one. I still do, but I don't know how much I would use it. With my complexion (read: clear) it would be handy, but I'm not sure I want to be that eccentric until I'm in my 70s.

Brollies Galore
I am really fond of the old-timey umbrellas like this one, with it's flowery print (I think I have bedsheets that match this), and even with the exchange rate the price isn't too bad.

Brollies Galore
The cutest thing ever. I love impractical, yet somehow novel, ideas.

Famous umbrellas:

The Penguin
I know he is a villain, but he had some seriously badass umbrellas. I am also very fond of the idea as umbrellas for transport, which leads me to:

Mary Poppins
Who I must admit, I've never liked much. I think it's that practically perfect in every way thing, although I do like her hat.

The Avengers: Steed
Gratuitous Feinnes posting Honestly, I chose the 1998 version because it's prettier. A man without an umbrella is a fool.

Hagrid
Has a pink umbrella. So do I:

My umbrella. From H&M, unabashedly girly. H&M has some nice, cheap, strange umbrellas. The other day I noticed some simple ones at the register, and might invest in a black one edged with lace to indulge my inner Gothic Lolita.

"Brahms, for all his grumbling and grizzling, had never guessed what it felt like to be suspected of stealing an umbrella. For this fool of a young man thought that she and Helen and Tibby had been playing the confidence trick on him, and that if he gave his address they would break into his rooms some midnight or other and steal his walkingstick too."

Maybe it's because I walk past the blindingly white and florescent storefront on my way to work (although when a customer left a catalog behind a few weeks ago I was rather taken with those images as well) but I really like Coach's ads this year. In general I'm not a fan of the brand, I think most of the typical Coach bags are heinous looking and deeply boring (although the Legacy collection is certainly much nicer than the usual) but I am really liking the bright tights and blocky color dresses in the ads.

(I know, lousy cropping job. Give me leeway,I beg your pardon! I am composing a presentation for class tomorrow as well as this post.)

I mean, I know that bright tights are all the rage these days, which is a bit of a disappointment for someone who's always been their advocate, but I really am quite taken with these ads. They're not quite fruity, although still wonderfully colorful and I am suddenly struck with the desire to have a thick wool dress that looks like a blanket.

My outfit from Thursday, which was oddly fitting for Shakespeare class as it was our first day reading Hamlet. I ended up wearing flats instead, because I am suddenly deeply afraid of damaging my feet. Unfortunate, as I have many many shoes, but my feet have already been somewhat inclined to shoe-damage since I was a child, and I don't want to end up with a terrible bunionectomy, so I will invest in lots of glorious flats to avoid this fate.

Despite my admittance on a love of knee socks only a few posts down, I have to admit that wearing them with anything other than my old uniforms has been a challenge. I've been able to trot proudly out of the house in over-the-knees with nary a second thought, but something about actual knee socks frightens me. I suppose it is the rest of the knee showing, and it somehow feels much more like a costume to me.

I did end up changing into yellow flats, and then when I discovered a grey sequined pair in my car (those lurkers!) I switched again.

I have no idea.

For a while now, I have been on the search for the perfect striped shirt. I have a blue and white one from gap that I bought ages ago but, as with most shirts from gap, the sleeves are rather too short and drive me into madness with constant pushing up.

I have a special fondness for striped shirts. They are, all at once, reminiscent of the early Hot Topic days of 14 (Beetlegeuse anyone? I distinctly remember buying a turtleneck because of it's Tim Burton-esque appeal)and the sharp neatness of nautical paraphernalia. At the moment there seems to be a shortage of perfect striped shirts, but I will continue my most noble hunt, unabated!

STYLE OF THE DAY (PART 1)

Yesterday it was really slow at work. Really slow, not just slow, but slow to a degree that I can't even comprehend because if I did, I would cease to exist. To combat the lethargy and insanity that comes with slow days in retail, my co-worker and I made things. She made a Hester Prynne doll (we had a red pen and she made it a Puritan looking hat. Clearly, this was the only option), I made a headband with a flower on it out of peds.

I'm mildly embarrassed to be posting a picture of me wearing peds in my hair but honestly, I kind of like it.

I'm not saying I'll wear it, it's made out of disposable pantyhose and staples for goodness sake, but I've never worn a headband over my hair this way and it's sort of nice. And, I don't know (STOP the coma abuse, self), I kind of like the color.

I wrote most of this post before the Oscars, and now I feel a little miffed that I waited this long to put it up, since it seems red was The Color to be wearing. No matter! I'm not really one who cares too much what celebrities and co. wear to awards shows, but my two cents is: I think Helen Mirren and Anne Hathaway wore it best.

Red is an odd color for me. I avoid it, except in food and sometimes in decorating rooms and things, and only really wear it in small doses. I love red lipstick (MAC 'Russian Red' is my shade of choice) but don't wear it often because I have a problem with eating constantly that doesn't agree at all with dark lipsticks. And yet, I cannot escape red! Red, red, red. Little Red Riding Hood comes to mind of course (I wrote a fantastic paper on her last semester), along with all other iconic reds.

I suppose it's because I feel like red screams at me. Obviously there are loads of other loud colors, but red just assaults me when it's on my body, or that I too much realize (if not directly—note to self, stop using parenthesis—but subconsciously and all that) the connotations of wearing red. I mean, there it is, when someone wants to stand out, louder than all the rest. Besides all that red is never a color I've been drawn too. I recoil from it, personally, but can't help but be sort of fascinated by it on other people.

DKNY

Sometimes she walks through the village in her
little red dress
all absorbed in restraining herself,
and yet, despite herself, she seems to move
according to the rhythm of her life to come.

-'Child in Red', by Rainer Maria Rilke

More important than a red dress, to me, are shoes! I am biased, I know. I work in shoes, and I love shoes. I tend to dress from the shoes (or hosiery) up and have piles and piles of impractical shoes despite my terribly mistreated feet. Shockingly, I have only one pair of red shoes. I bought them on a whim, and have since learned how glorious they are. H&M has a pair of cotton red flats that I would love for spring (honestly, I need to stop thinking about it. We've got all kinds of insane weather coming) but sadly they only have a 5 and a 10 left.

Moira Shearer in The Red Shoes (1948)

She wore neither a train nor a golden crown, but beautiful red morocco shoes; they were indeed much finer than those which the shoemaker’s wife had sewn for little Karen. There is really nothing in the world that can be compared to red shoes!
-'The Red Shoes', Hans Christian Anderson

After all that complaining, today is a lovely day. It's rainy, this is true, but it isn't the dreadful slush and leftover snow that's been milling around the past few weeks so I am free to wear shoes that aren't completely protective against the elements.

Meet my new umbrella! I thought I lost my pink one and snagged this as a replacement. It is not the same, but he is a fine specimen of an umbrella really. Perhaps they will get married.

Today is just what I needed (obviously). Hopefully it will last me through the next few weeks of winter, since we always get one horrendous snow storm in March. In the meantime, today I am out gallivanting, with the promise of lunch and possibly a date to the movies later. Happy birthday, Presidents!

It was way too cold today to be wearing this, but as it's one of my last days for a few without snow on the ground, I decided to risk it. I've been rather lazy and unimaginative lately with outfits. I really just can't be too bothered to think of new combinations and so I just throw on something that already exists. On the upside, having a catalogue of outfits I've worn does make this task easier, in a Clueless kind of way. At the moment I am sitting lazily watching movies while everything else gets coated in snow, much to my complaint.

I have saved trillions of pictures from style.com this week, but as most of them have been covered by much clever bloggers, I'll just post a few from my saved randomly.

Anna Sui (I can almost never resist all black, especially with odd bits of lace and other wonderful assortments)

Lacoste (I had a bunch from this, my always lurking just below the surface school girl taking over, but I like this one particularly)

DKNY (Pants! I loved DKNY, although this seems to be a generally unpopular opinion)

Philosophy (I need some unabashed fairy-tale prettiness in my life. I want to mash my face into all kinds of velvet this time around)

Karen Walker (There was a lot I liked from this also. Probably because it all feels like something I would wear, or would strive to wear)

So that's that, she said!

I mentioned once before that Out of Africa is a significant movie for me. Besides reducing me to a terrificly heartbroken pile of tears and Robert Redford reminding me of my dad to a frightening degree, the look of the thing is a love affair for me.

I've always really liked the wedding outfit, despite the oddly shaped hat, with it's Maleficent-esque collar and edible cream color. I really adore most of her dresses in this movie, especially the delicate dressing gowns and lace shawl things she wears while storytelling. Khaki actually looks appealing, though that I'm sure owes a lot to the environment and individuals, with smart riding outfits and things being sort of practically sartorial and sharp. I really grew up with my dad dressing awfully reminiscent of this movie, so it seems very right and comfortable to me.

I'm also really in love with her house.

I love the improbable strangeness of places like these. The ridiculousness of setting up a full table and chairs with the best china outside, with putting a carpet on the grass, is all very appealing to me. I know it's sort of presumptuous and obnoxious to do that sort of thing as well, one of those symbolizing dominance over landscape and all that, but the impracticality of it really appeals to me. I think it is why I am also fond of movies where people have gone places and put carpets on sand and go and have afternoon tea on dunes. It's so strange, so alien looking, I love the audacity of it. So besides that I want all those tea-steeped things in that house, I love how it's all just so and very all plopped down in the middle of gorgeous Africa.

Anyway, it's all of that and then it's also one of those really personal movies I want to curl up inside, that squeezes my poor little heart till I think it might burst.

When I first applied for my job one of the questions I asked during my interview was about the dress code. Blissfully, we were permitted to wear anything provided it fell into a vague 'business casual' or 'not too dressy but neat and professional' type of description. I work retail, so this was wonderfully lax but meant that I could wear many of the skirts and dresses I hadn't the nerve (yet) to wear to classes.

And then, they hit us with a blow so shocking, and just two weeks into my employment, that we were never to be the same. Black only! Or white shirts. We were to look like the girls at Coach, which was not so bad for me really since I never feel so warm and happy and enclosed as in all black ensembles (though some of my co-workers were dreadfully unhappy), in trousers and sweater vests*. I have to say, I am not a trouser kind of girl. I'm not really a pants kind of girl in general, and I feel so icky in office-y attire, so boring and plain and blank. Needless to say I've tried very hard to wear all black in exciting ways, day after day, shift after shift.

Sequins are easy, I love them, they add a bit of flair and texture and general quirk that delights me. On the downside they have a particular talent for irritating that ever-so delicate skin on the underside of the upper arm.

I don't wear these shoes anymore. I gave them to Mom, since they squish my toes terribly and I believe they are responsible for a bump on my foot that was not there before, and am very sad. Slips and strange tights however, make life better.

Anyhow, I find dressing for work increasingly difficult. The most frustrating thing about trousers is the length. They do not allow for a change from heels to flats, most of the time, and so I often bypass my modest little pile of them and instead toss on skirts or dresses. I do wonder what will happen when I am forced to get a job that does not involve selling things, when the only options are indeed suits and trousers.

So yes, in my childhood I watched a lot of old movies. Two in particular are linked not only in their creation, but also for me in my childhood. While not exactly an old movie What's Up doc, with Barbara Streisand and Ryan O'Neal, is possibly one of my favorite movies ever. Words cannot express how much I love this movie, or the movie it came from: Bringing Up Baby. I feel like it's an under- appreciated movie, really. It is just fabulous and hilarious and I want to hug it like mad.

I must mention that I love the outfits. I love Barbara's (as Judy) red paisley/plaid/print shirt with a deep passion. I love that shirt and have always wanted one. Her hat is also deeply adorable, although it would look atrocious on it, and her makeup is lovely also. She wears a white suit at the dinner scene in the movie that I've always envied. Madeline Kahn wears a ridiculous tea number that I cannot decide if I want or find revolting. She also dons an extremely insane robe.

There is the heinously glorious robe. This clip is here mostly because I enjoy it. Also note the plaid overnight case! I must have one, even though I never go anywhere overnight, simply to tote it around and imagine it has something interesting in it, like 70s clothing or igneous rock formations.

With Kathering Hepburn and Carey Grant there is no possible way Bringing Up Baby is not brilliant and adorable. And once again, I love her clothes:

This dress in particular. It's so swingy, so wonderfully girly, without being confectionery and prim. (And of course, I have a thing for that whole uptight professorly look on guys).

I am very scattered and random (a warning!).

Today I shopped a ridiculous amount and spent much more money than I probably should have. On the upside, I managed some really lovely deals and bought practical shoes. I always feel guilty when I spend chunks of money on clothes that aren't thrift acquired, since I know there are plenty of gems lurking around for pennies, but I can also justify my way out of a paper bag.

I borrowed my cousin, Annie's, cardigan for the day, and it was a wonderfully comfortable outfit for lengthy shopping excursions. We also bought two of the same dresses and have yet to decide if it is a little too twee and reminiscent of when we were very young if we wear them together and take pictures. Not seriously, of course, but in a silly manner.

I did go thrifting the other day and bought an armful of slips, some with lovely little vintage tags, and this pretty little blouse form the twenty-five cent rack. I passed up a cropped fur coat that reminded me of something Tenenbaum because I was low on cash, and I've been thinking about it ever since. That is always the way, no?

The greatest thing of the week:

Bee Cake

Lately I am fond of black-and-white, shadowy things, that are inky and grey and just a bit ancient looking or old in the manner of stories like The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Medieval productions of Shakespeare plays. Somehow, I connect them in my mind.

Helena Bonham Carter

I forget :(

Apparently, sticks and grass gone to seed and wheaty-looking things also factor into this current disposition.

I have been awful about this whole blogging thing! I suppose I will blame my insecurity about my blog skillz in general although, to be truthful, the cause of all my time-related problems stems from work. But now the holidays are over and store are back to normal hours, which feel so wonderful so far, that hopefully I'll be actually doing the things I enjoy and figuring out exactly what I want this blog to be.

A few Holiday pictorials are in order!

A smile would have been nice, but oh well!

I also have to confess that I've been slumping around the world in ridiculous outfits. We've had extreme amounts of snow piling up all around, and even though I know I ought to expect it, I am still miserable every time. I love it from inside, being homey and making cookies, but then I inevitably have to leave the house to go to work or some other distasteful endeavor, and I hate the snow. Oh! Complaints! My main sort is that I am forced to wear horrendous footwear.

Though we are only just entering the dreadful winter season promised by my Upstate residence, my car is encapsulated in ice this morning, I can't help but want to dress (or at least buy) for spring just a little bit.

I blame Bewitched with Nicole Kidman. I'm pretty sure the movie was some kind of flop, but I rather liked it. It's a cute wee film; there are certainly worse movies to spend an hour or so watching out there. Mainly though, I really love the clothes. Specifically this skirt:

It reminds me of one I saw in a store ages and years ago but didn't buy because I couldn't justify the price tag at the time. Oh, my heart is broken for my lapse in judgment! I cringe at the thought of it not belonging to me, of leaving it lonely on the rack, oh ruffles!

But back to the movie. I love her girly skirts and cardigans, purposefully reminiscent of Samantha's outfits on the TV show but perhaps a little sweeter . It's certainly not deeply fashion-foward, but it's appealingly girly in a way that might only work in the movies.

I would also happily own one of the strange frocks Shirley Maclaine wears as Endora because who doesn't love a bit of jewel-toned froth?

Anthropologie piled flowers on hair for the cover of their December catalog (I love their catalogs. I have a huge pile of them in my room, from which I like to cut bits and pieces out and glue them to things) and I would like to say that I have been all over this type of thing for at least two weeks:

Observe!

Okay, so it's on a much smaller scale, but still. I bought PILES of hair flowers at H&M on Black Friday and have been affixing them in large numbers to almost everything I can find. It's a nice little thing when the weather is so terrifically cold that it freezes your eyelashes.

I have to say, it does make me wish I lived in a milder climate since most of it brings to mind warmer days of light cardigans and funny little breezes. Oh well! I will have to be content with the few warmer days here before it dips into the 20s, and my poor little face crystallizes in the wind.
